Several free good software out there can handle the job we want to do, we did test and decide to use and manage 2 softwares, both can be purchase and upgraded to a "pro version" with better features than the free version.

to get a good communication quality  several factors have to be taken in consideratiion in the situation of a boat using a software here is the priority list :

1) get the best wi-fi signals you can get (use external usb wifi-card instead of builtin card if you can)

2) get a good set of headphone/microphone (those are not expensive)

3) don't download files, emails or browse the web while you are in communication

4) stop any software in the system tray (right bottom bar in window) thoses softwares consume CPU and or internet bandwith, skype for example is always talking with the skype network and sending and receiving packets from others users, this is affecting the bandwith of your connection

also severals factors are not depending of you or us lets say you are 100 boats in the bay sharing a wi-fi connection that as a low bandwith connection on the land your connection will suffer, also the wheater raining and electric interference can occur, this will affect your connection as well and if your termination call is located in a place where the switch phone are very old and noisy this will of course be reflected in the communication.

but in general you can be connected and keep a good conversation with family, friends or clients whitout problems, inbound or outbound calls in America, Europe or Asia are more than often better than regular phone calls.
